From the book I am reading:
". . . in France window-shopping was called leche vitrine, the licking of the window; a wonderful expression that somehow conveyed the longing felt by those who wanted the goods within but could not buy them."
What a great explanation.
I like this one. Je l'aime. One I learned recently is that the French word for "pothole" is nid de poule---or nest of the chicken. I guess it is the idea of a chicken scratching a hole in the ground to build her nest. Funny--how different cultures originate their idioms.
